JURUPA VALLEY, Calif., May 28 (UPI) -- Animal rescuers in California said a 5-week-old kitten carried off by a hawk survived when the clumsy raptor dropped it out of the sky.

Riverside County Animal Services said in a Facebook post Jurupa Valley resident Lindsey Gage and her 6-year-old daughter, Jaylie, saw the hawk take off flying from a neighbor's basketball hoop just before 1 p.m. Tuesday with the white kitten in its talons, but the bird didn't get far before the kitten slipped from its grip and fell to the ground below.

Gage was able to locate the kitten with help from another neighbor before the hawk could come back for a second try at turning the feline into lunch.

Gage brought the kitten to Western Riverside County/City Animal Shelter in Jurupa Valley, where the cat was treated for a non-life-threatening chest wound.
