NEW YORK, May 4 (UPI) -- A caught-on-camera New York subway explosion was sparked when a motorman attempted to dislodge a garbage can tossed onto the tracks.

A video posted to YouTube Sunday shows the motorman using a piece of wood to attempt to free the garbage can trapped under the 6 train at the Cypress Avenue station when the bin's proximity to the third rail caused it to shoot off sparks around the Metropolitan Transportation Authority worker.

Kevin Ortiz, a spokesman for the MTA, said the motorman was not seriously injured in the blast.

Ortiz said the garbage can thrown onto the tracks was the latest in a string of vandalism incidents on the city's subway tracks.

"We continue to work with [the] NYPD who have already arrested individuals a couple of weeks ago," Ortiz told WPIX-TV.
