CORAL GABLES, Fla., May 3 (UPI) -- A man is suing a South Florida hospital for improperly disposing of his amputated leg by throwing it in the garbage, according to a report.

John Timiriasieff, 56, filed a lawsuit against Doctors Hospital in Coral Gables, Fla., on Wednesday, the Miami Herald reports.

The lawsuit says Timiriasieff suffered emotional distress after the hospital threw his amputated right leg into the garbage instead of incinerating it per usual policy.

After Timiriasieff underwent the amputation in October, homicide detectives found his leg in a waste management facility. The limb still had a tag with Timiriasieff's name on it, and the officers notified the Key Largo native.

Timiriasieff contacted Doctors Hospital for an explanation but to no avail. "When we contacted the hospital, they claimed they could not give us any explanation for why or how this happened," Clay Roberts, Timiriasieff's attorney, told the Herald.

The lawsuit says Timiriasieff suffered emotional distress, an invasion of privacy, embarrassment and humiliation due to the incident.

Doctor's Hospital told the Herald it could not comment on details of the occurrence due to patient privacy concerns but said in a statement: "Proper procedures have been reinforced at the hospital to prevent similar situations from happening in the future."

Another Florida man filed a similar lawsuit in 2011, suing a firefighter-paramedic who took his foot and part of his leg from the scene of an Interstate 95 vehicle crash in 2008.
