OMAHA, April 27 (UPI) -- A Nebraska teenager was unable to attend her prom due to illness, so her friends brought the prom to her hotel room.

Madison Hurd, 16, a junior at Milford High School, was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit at Children's Hospital with heart problems last week and it soon became clear the teen would not be able to attend the school's Great Gatsby-themed prom, which she helped plan.

"When we found out she was having some heart problems, that's when we knew there was no way she was going to be able to go to her prom," mother Catrece Hurd told KETV.

Hurd's friends teamed up with nurses at the hospital to bring the dance to her hospital room.

"It just started snowballing into this huge thing where [some] of the nurses started gathering all of the Gatsby supplies we had," nurse Casey VanNurden said.

Nurses helped Hurd with her hair and makeup and her boyfriend arrived in a tuxedo with a corsage.

"Even though I'm exhausted, I'm just very happy, very happy, everything, this is better than real prom," Madison Hurd said. "My dress is here. I worked hard for that dress, so I'm just going to put it up there."

Milford High administrators said they are planning to set up a video chat so Hurd can keep tabs on the real dance from the hospital room.

"This is above and beyond, I've never seen a staff and doctors in the hospital go out of their way just to make one-day special for my 16-year-old," Catrece Hurd said.
