Florida crash splits stolen Prius in half, driver flees on foot

The Toyota Prius split in half when it struck two light poles and Sunny's Nail Salon late Thursday night in Orlando.

ORLANDO, Fla., March 27 (UPI) -- Police in Orlando, Fla., said a stolen Prius was ripped in half by a late night crash and the suspected driver was able to flee the scene on foot.

Orlando police said the hybrid car was traveling at a high rate of speed late Thursday when the driver lost control of the car and struck two light poles and nearby business Sunny's Nail Salon.

The Toyota Prius, which police said was previously reported stolen in Orange County, was ripped completely in half by the crash, which also completely destroyed at least one of the light poles.

Police said the teenage driver was arrested while attempting to flee the scene on foot. Investigators said a gun was found in the wreckage of the partitioned Prius.

The juvenile suspect was wanted on multiple previous felony warrants, including charges of armed burglary with a firearm, possession of a firearm by a minor, possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, carrying a concealed firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, resisting arrest without violence, grand theft, possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia.

Police said charges from the Thursday incident are pending the outcome of an investigation.
