TORONTO, March 2 (UPI) -- Toronto police said a mysterious tunnel discovered near York University was built by two men for "personal reasons" and the builders were "very apologetic."

Police did not offer many details about the mystery tunnel's origins, but said they had spoken to its builders, two men in their 20s, and determined the "very apologetic" pair had constructed the underground tunnel next to the Rexall Center Sports and Entertainment Complex for "personal reasons."

"Investigators have verified their account and are satisfied there was neither criminal intent nor any threat to the people or city of Toronto," police said in a statement.

"The investigation is concluded," police said.

Police spokesman Victor Kwong told CBC News the tunnel builders "just wanted to dig a cave."

"That really is what our investigation has led to ... they just wanted to dig a cave to hang out," he said.
