Graffiti gaffe: Vandals paint 'Hail Satin' on historic bridge

GREENCASTLE, Ind., March 2 (UPI) -- Authorities in Indiana said vandals targeted a 135-year-old covered bridge for graffiti including swastikas and the apparently misspelled message "Hail Satin."

The Houck Covered Bridge in Putnam County, which the state paid $1.7 million to refurbish in 2014, was targeted by vandals late Tuesday or early Wednesday, authorities said.

"We were able to get some information based on the type of the graffiti and writing of the graffiti and the colors and gave us more information to run with. This is kids. We are confident we are dealing with juveniles," Pat McFadden of the Putnam County Sheriff's Department told WXIN-TV.

McFadden said some of the graffiti, which includes the apparently misspelled message "Hail Satin," can't be cleaned from the bridge until the weather turns warmer.

"It would be my suggestion that the youngsters get a hold of their parents and come see us before we have to come and get a hold of them in a week or two," McFadden said.
