SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Jan. 5 (UPI) -- An Arizona bobcat was uninjured after being hit by a car traveling about 40 mph and taking a ride inside the grill of the sedan, officials said.

A.J. Michaels and Susan Simpson said they were driving to a Scottsdale restaurant Friday night when they saw a small animal dart out in front of their Mazda sedan.

Michaels said he assumed the animal, which appeared to be a cat, was killed in the collision, but he inspected his car after arriving at the restaurant and discovered a bobcat was stuck between the grill and radiator.

The couple said they were shocked to discover the animal was still alive.

"We didn't think any kind of animal could sustain that kind of hit," Michaels told KNXV-TV.

The Arizona Game and Fish official who took the bobcat to the Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center for evaluation said the animal appeared to be completely uninjured.

"I would say his condition is amazing," Geoffrey Hossack told KPHO-TV. "It's unheard of that an animal this small is going get hit by a vehicle and survive."

Game and Fish spokeswoman Lynda Lambert said the bobcat had "somehow crawled in between the radiator and grill of the car."

Hossack subdued the 7-pound bobcat by shooting it with a tranquilizer dart.

Officials said the bobcat may be a young male, as it was making a clicking noise associated with juveniles trying to find their mothers.

Lambert said the bobcat will remain at the wildlife center for further evaluation and will likely be released somewhere outside the city limits.
