YEKATERINBURG, Russia, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- Russian police said an officer seen on video clinging to the hood of a speeding car evaded serious injury when the suspect finally stopped the vehicle.

Police said Sgt. Sergei Ryabkov, 22, was struck by a Chevrolet Aveo driven by Denis Shaehov, 31, in Yekaterinburg and he grabbed hold of the vehicle's windshield wipers to prevent being thrown off the car's hood.

A witness's dashboard camera captured a brief video of the officer clinging to the hood of the speeding car as it passed.

Police said Ryabkov rode on the hood for more than a mile before the car came to a stop on the outskirts of town.

Ryabkov sustained a bruised thigh, but declined medical attention, police said.

Shaehov, who police said was banned from operating a motor vehicle due to a previous drunken driving incident, was arrested on a charge of use of violence against a government representative. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail.
