In 1958, in Indianapolis, retired Boston candy manufacturer Robert H. W. Welch, Jr., established the John Birch Society, a right-wing organization dedicated to fighting what it perceived to be the extensive infiltration of communism into U.S. society.

In 2013, Former managers Bobby Cox, Tony La Russa and Joe Torre were elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2014 in a unanimous vote by the Expansion Era Committee. (They were inducted in a July 27, 2014, ceremony along with ex-players Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux and Frank Thomas.)
