The flash, which was also recorded on cellphone camera by some witnesses in Rezh, inspired rumors of a meteor or a missile explosion, but a local observatory said no objects were reported to have fallen from the sky Nov. 14.

The local Emergencies Ministry declined to comment on the videos.

"No exercise and training were underway on that day, and no military units are based in the region, so we have nothing to do with it," the military press service told news site E1.ru.

Viktor Grokhovsky, a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences' meteorite committee, said the flash may have resulted from a falling space object that burned up above the clouds.
