MILWAUKEE, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Authorities in Wisconsin said a truck driver who blamed his GPS when he drove onto a pedestrian bridge at a park was fined nearly $600.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office said the 50-year-old driver for Kentucky-based Paschall Truck Lines drove his truck and a 53-foot trailer onto the pedestrian walkway at Lake Park in Milwaukee about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and caused damage to multiple trees, two pedestrian bridges and concrete railings.

The sheriff's office said the truck drove over one of the bridges and came to a stop on a peninsula behind a lighthouse in the park.

The driver was taken to a hospital for evaluation and issued a $579.80 ticket for reckless driving and failure to obey signs. Investigators said the driver told them he had been following instructions from his GPS when he drove into the pedestrian area of the park.

A structural engineer examined the bridges and determined they were safe for pedestrians to use. The truck was removed from the park Wednesday.
