Hammerhead sharks stalk fishermen in Florida, California

PALM BEACH, Fla., Nov. 13 (UPI) -- A group of kayakers fishing off Palm Beach, Florida, got an up-close look at a 13-foot hammerhead shark that followed them for 2 miles.

Mark Naumovitz of Port St. Lucie told WPTV it isn't that odd to see sharks, but "when you have a dorsal fin trailing you like it's Jaws, it's a different story."

Hammerheads and other sharks are a common sight off Florida's Atlantic coast throughout the year. The same area is witness to a massive shark migration each year in which thousands of sharks can be seen in shallow water, chasing bait fish. Attacks on humans are rare.

Another video of a hammerhead is going viral, but from the West Coast.

Forrest Galante, a former Naked and Afraid reality show contestant, posted video of a spearfishing dive with a rare sighting of a hammerhead off Anacapa Island near Los Angeles.

Hammerheads can live 20 to 30 years and grow up to 20 feet long and 1,000 pounds. They use their wide heads to pin their favorite prey -- stingrays -- to the sea floor.
