WANSFORD, England, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- A two-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier named Ziggy was found dumped in the woods with a crossbow bolt in his head millimeters from his brain.

Two good samaritans rescued Ziggy and took him straight to the vet who removed the 20-inch bolt from his head.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said he was probably wandering around the woods near Peterborough, England, for two days, "terrified and in complete agony."

They believe the dog was shot intentionally and at very close range and Ziggy must have flinched at the last minute.

"It really broke my heart this one. What really got me was the way Ziggy sat there, with that bolt through his head, wagging his tail at me in such a good natured way -- asking for a bit of a fuss," said RSPCA inspector Justin Stubbs.

The rescue group called it a miracle that the bolt missed the dog's organs but he is not out of the woods yet. The RSPCA will be closely watching Ziggy as he recovers.

The RSPCA is trying to find Ziggy's owners and any witnesses to the incident to find out what happened.
