HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., Sept. 30 (UPI) -- Organizers of the Surf City Surf Dog competition in California said about 65 dogs turned up to hang tail on surfboards.

The sixth annual event Sunday in Huntington Beach, organized by Unleashed by Petco, raised about $6,000 for nonprofits and featured about 65 canines braving the ocean for surfing glory.

"This is our largest event yet," organizer Lisa Scolman told the Orange County Register. "It's exciting to see where dog surfing is going and to see it growing and growing."

The event featured categories for small, medium, large and extra large breeds as well as a tandem event for pets who preferred to ride the waves alongside their humans.

This year's event was the first to also offer a "shredder" category for the most skilled canine surfers.

"Dogs can really, really surf," Scolman said.
