Police defended the steep style budget, with a spokesman saying the haircuts are a necessary part of the department's work.

"We are in a special industry that demands a very strict hairstyle. Three times a month is perfectly reasonable," the spokesman said.

However, residents said the price tag is too steep, even with the amount only coming out to about $2 per cut. The New Express Daily reported some residents have branded the $32,000 as "barber welfare" and demanded the budget be trimmed to a more reasonable amount.
