PARIS, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- French police said the only person fooled by a wanted man's attempt to fake his own funeral was his prematurely-mourning grandmother.

Authorities said the man, identified as Cedric L., 26, cooked up the fake funeral scheme to escape charges including fraud and theft.

Police said the man posed as his brother and had a funeral notice put online and in the Ouest-France regional paper.

"His mother, father, brothers, sister and the whole of the family would like to inform you of the death of (Cedric L.), who passed away on Thursday, September 11th, at the age of 26," the notice read. "The funeral will be celebrated Tuesday, September 16th at 10:30."

However, police said the notice made them suspicious and officers showed up at the funeral to find there was no body and only one mourner -- the suspect's grandmother.
