Munich mayor practicing to tap Oktoberfest keg

Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter says he has been practicing keg tapping so it doesn't take him more than "three or four strikes" to tap the first wooden cask of this year's Oktoberfest.

MUNICH, Germany, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- The mayor of Munich, Germany, said he has been practicing for one of the office's most famous duties -- tapping the year's first wooden Oktoberfest keg.

Dieter Reiter, who took office earlier this year, said he has been practicing to tap the first keg when the annual celebration of German beer kicks off in October so he doesn't end up a laughingstock of the festival.

"Three or four strikes. It shouldn't take more," Reiter told the Abendzeitung newspaper.

Reiter said he is not aiming to match the accomplishment the previous mayor, Christian Ude, who became the first Munich mayor to tap a cask with only two strikes in 2005.

The mayor said his goals are set a bit lower.

"I'm planning to keep myself and the people around me dry," he said.
