BENTONVILLE, Ark., Aug. 1 (UPI) -- A number of people have noticed something about a particular brand of ice cream sandwiches.

They don't melt in the sun.

The Great Value ice cream sandwich from Walmart is impervious to the sun's rays. According to numerous reports, the sandwiches can be left out in the sun for hours without melting.

There are apparently some reasons why the sandwiches don't melt, but it certainly seems a little unnerving.

"One of the thickening agents that's used often times is called Carrageenan. It's kind of a seaweed extract that thickens when it gets moist," registered dietitian Tim Cunningham told NewsChannel 10. "There are quite a few things that keep that food structure so it doesn't fall apart."

Regardless of the way they do or don't melt, the sandwiches are "top sellers" at Walmart.

"Great Value ice cream sandwiches melt," Walmart spokesperson Danit Marquardt told the Washington Post. "Ice cream melts based on the ingredients including cream. Ice cream with more cream will generally melt at a slower rate, which is the case with our Great Value ice cream sandwiches."
