Ronayne and his partner, Paula Carter, were both hit with bans after they upset a pub owner during his first day in office by being part of a group that "behaved badly." The pair ended up being banned from 36 area pubs after a ruling from Gosport's Pub Watch.
"Everybody is treated the same. People need to be treating licensees and staff with respect," said GPW Chairman Phil Cox, Express reported. "But we don't expect the mayor of Gosport, who represents our town, to be involved in incidents like this."
The 54-year-old announced his resignation and said it was a "great personal disappointment."
The town councilor maintains that he only had a single pint of beer.
"I can assure you, I wasn't the drunken mayor that arrived," Ronayne told the BBC. "My decision is not based on any admission of wrong-doing. I do not wish to bring the position of the mayoralty into disrepute, nor tarnish the good reputation of Gosport."
