WAYNE, N.J., July 9 (UPI) -- A commuter in New Jersey allegedly caught a bus driver reading behind the wheel while driving more than 40 passengers on Tuesday morning along Route 80 in Wayne.

The reading and driving allegedly occurred for about 10 minutes while the New Jersey Transit bus driver negotiated stop-and-go traffic.

According to the commuter, the driver, who was operating the 324 bus between the Wayne Park and Ride and the Port Authority Bus Terminal in NYC, started off with a pamphlet and went from there.

"First, he took out a pamphlet, and he's reading a pamphlet. And it looked like it was vacation pamphlet, maybe planning a trip -- I'm like, 'OK, it's summer. This may be quick.' He put it down," the unidentified commuter told CBS 2. "Next thing, the driver takes out a hardcover book from off the dash."

The commuter told the station that once the traffic cleared out, the driver ditched the book and focused on the road.

"We share the concerns of the customers who brought this matter to our attention. We are committed to ensuring the safety of bus operation and taking swift and appropriate action upon the completion of our investigation," an NJ TRANSIT representative said in a statement.

It is not clear what that "swift and appropriate action" will be.
