Altamonte Springs wasp attack lands father and 7-year-old son in ICU

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS , Fla., June 25 (UPI) -- A Florida father was walking with his 7-year-old son and their 4-year-old dog when all three were attacked by a massive swarm of wasps in Altamonte Springs.

David Alvarez isn't sure if it was him, his son Jordan or their Shiba Inu, China, but one of them stepped on a yellow jacket nest and the wasps began to attack.

Alvarez is allergic to stinging insects but Jordan was somehow able to lead him away from the wasps and out to the road so they could summon help.

"I know he wanted to quit because he said, 'I just wanted to give up because it hurt so bad, but I had to keep going because I seen daddy laying there on the ground'," Jennifer Jones, Alvarez's wife and Jordan's mother, told WKMG. "I just can't believe how strong he is."

Beekeeper Jim Krunze heard screaming and he immediately knew that it was probably yellow jackets attacking.

He grabbed his beekeeping gear, hopped in his truck and was able to find Alvarez and his son. After pulling Jordan to safety, Krunze went back for Alvarez.

"It was probably 15 or 20 of them still attacking him," Krunze told the Orlando Sentinel. "I was pinching them dead from all parts of his body. Thank goodness (the EMTs) got there quick and transported them quickly."

Father and son were taken to two different hospitals for treatment.

"Just to see them like that and so swollen and so many marks on them, it's just horrible," Jones said.

China was also found and taken for treatment after being stung about 30 times.
