WASHINGTON, June 6 (UPI) -- The Central Intelligence Agency's presence on social media is no joke, even though the agency tried to make a funny with its inaugural tweet.

The CIA account is legit because Twitter has given it a verified icon.

The agency has also opened official Facebook, Flickr and YouTube accounts.

"By expanding to these platforms, CIA will be able to more directly engage with the public and provide information on CIA's mission, history, and other developments," CIA Director John Brennan said in a statement. "We have important insights to share, and we want to make sure that unclassified information about the Agency is more accessible to the American public that we serve, consistent with our national security mission."

Among the 25 accounts the agency is following are the FBI, DEA, Homeland Security, NASA and the White House.

"This has been a lengthy process," agency spokesman Dean Boyd told the Wall Street Journal. "It's been in the works for a long time."
