DETROIT, June 3 (UPI) -- Tuesday is "RoboCop Day" in Detroit, a festive event that is being celebrated in tandem with the DVD and Blu-ray release of the recent remake of the 1987 film.

In order to mark the occasion, a 10-foot RoboCop statue will appear in public for the first time and the cyborg crime fighter will also throw out the first pitch at the Detroit Tigers game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Comerica Park.

The bronze-cast statue is the result of a Kickstarter crowd-sourcing campaign that raised $67,436, more than $17,000 more than its $50,000 goal.

The campaign started three years ago when someone tweeted to Detroit Mayor Dave Bing that, "Philadelphia has a statue of Rocky & RoboCop would kick Rocky's butt. He's a GREAT ambassador for Detroit."

Bing answered by saying, "There are not any plans to erect a statue to Robocop. Thank you for the suggestion," MLive reported.

The statue dedication will take place at the Detroit Public Safety Headquarters but it is unclear where the statue will be placed on a permanent basis.
