MASCOUTAH, Ill., May 15 (UPI) -- A St. Louis reporter got her hands (and nostrils) dirty during a report about a farmer who uses human feces as fertilizer for his crops.

While she was reporting on the story, KSDK-TV reporter Elizabeth Matthews grabbed a handful of the human-produced fertilizer and smelled it.

"It's dry, it kind of looks like potting soil and it doesn't smell very good," Matthews said while sniffing the poop.

Matthews posted on Twitter that the poop was treated.

Farmer Shane Reinneck gets the waste from a treatment plant and admits that it smells, but he plans to keep using it. "As long as there are humans and as long as you are eating and as long as you are doing the deed, as long as they are going to make it I am going to haul it," Reinneck said.
