PHILADELPHIA, April 14 (UPI) -- A sign outside a Philadelphia sports bar inscribed with a joke about domestic violence sparked controversy over the weekend and got the jokester fired.

An A-frame sign containing a Heineken Light beer logo outside Bar-Ly was inscribed with the message, “I like my beer like I like my violence… domestic.”

The sign was taken down a few hours after it was put up when the bar received complaints.

“We didn’t want to offend people, so we took it down,” a representative of Bar-Ly told NBC10. “I personally didn’t think it was offensive.”

A bar spokesperson said the owner of Bar-Ly did not approve the sign before it was posted and that the staff member who put it used "very poor judgment."

"In no way does Bar-Ly condone domestic violence nor do we find it humorous," according to statement from the bar. "We are sorry to everyone who was offended."
