WAIMEA, Hawaii, April 10 (UPI) -- A Hawaii police officer got to use his squad car for something besides taking a crook to the police station.

When Kona Patrol Officer Mario Ochoa was driving his wife Ryan to the hospital on Tuesday so she could give birth, they were about 10 miles away when the baby started coming.

Ochoa did what he had to and pulled over on the side of Highway 190 in Waimea.

Eight-pound, 15.5-ounce Marcella Kahealani Ochoa was delivered on his passenger seat.

"It was pretty fast, I had enough time to put my gloves on, and she said, I gotta push, and there was the head," Ochoa said. "It was pretty cool. How many people can say they delivered their own baby?"

Marcella was born in minutes, unlike her sister Ronan, who took 30 hours to be delivered.

It’s been a pretty good couple of months for Ochoa as he was named Officer of the Month by the Kona Crime Prevention Committee in March.

After winning Officer of the Month, Ochoa is now eligible to become the Officer of the Year.
