April 2 (UPI) -- An Egyptian farmer will be spending time in jail for “humiliating the military” after he pretended that his donkey was recently resigned military chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi last September.

The Qena Misdemeanor Court sentenced Omar Abul Maged to a year in jail for naming his donkey “Sisi” and putting a military hat on the donkey’s head.

Former Defense Minister al-Sisi ousted former President Mohamed Morsi in July and is now running for president himself.

“These recent years of our nation's history have conclusively shown that no one can become president of Egypt against the will of the people or short of their support. Never can anyone force Egyptians to vote for a president they do not want,” al-Sisi said during his announcement.

Abdul Maged has been in custody for six months already.

After al-Sisi resigned last week, the criticism against him has intensified in some circles.

“From now on ridiculing Sisi is not an insult to the military institution, as he resigned, insulting him is a national duty,” posted Twitter user Salama Abdul Hamid, according to the Egypt Independent.
