A Swedish family was shocked to find a rat measuring over 15 inches in length in their kitchen after being tipped off about its presence because their cat was too scared to enter the room.
"We thought it could be a little mouse, but after a while we figured it couldn't be because it was making too much noise," Signe Bengtsson of Solna told The Local. "It was right there in our rubbish bin, a mighty monster. I was petrified. I couldn't believe such a big rat could exist.”
The Bengtssons were so disgusted by the rat they started stomping whenever they went near the kitchen so it would run away. Unfortunately, it didn’t really work.
"By the time I got home, the rat was so domesticated that it just sat under the kitchen table," said husband Erik Korsås.
The family enlisted the help of exterminators to help kill the viking rat. They put down three heavy-duty traps and one of them quickly snared the creature. After it got loose, the rat hid behind the dishwasher and then died. "The kids were afraid it would come back to life as some sort of zombie rat. They didn't want to touch it," Korsås said.
The rat’s massive measurements don’t even include the length of its tail.
"It was quite a shocking experience," Bengtsson said. "No one wanted to go into the kitchen after, and the cat was terrified for a week. The pest controllers said they'd never seen such a big rat before."
