German zoo releases first pics of polar bear twins

March 19, 2014 at 3:15 PM

MUNICH, Germany, March 19 (UPI) -- A German zoo is giving the public their first glimpse of twin polar bear cubs with a series of pictures of the young bears exploring their enclosure.

The Hellabrunn Zoo in Munich released a series of photos depicting the 14-week-old cubs, a male and a female, exploring their enclosure with their 7-year-old mother, Giovanna, the British newspaper the Guardian reported Wednesday.

The zoo said officials have not yet decided whether father Yoghi, 14, will be reunited with the family in the enclosure. They said the behavior of Giovanna will be the main factor in the decision, but Yoghi is currently courting another female at the Stuttgart zoo.

Zoo officials said the enclosure has been redesigned to more closely resemble a polar bear habitat in nature.
