School closed due to damage from deer, dogs

LOTHIAN, Md., March 13 (UPI) -- A Maryland school was closed for a day after three deer were chased into the building and attacked by a pair of dogs before school hours.

Bob Mosier, a spokesman for Anne Arundel County Public Schools, said the deer crashed through the glass doors at Southern Middle School in Lothian, which is also the temporary home of Lothian Elementary while construction is ongoing at the elementary school, and were pursued into the facility by two dogs, the Baltimore Sun reported Thursday.

Anne Arundel County police Lt. T.J. Smith said the alarm went off at the school about 4 a.m. Monday and officers responded to find one deer dead in a hallway, one "in distress" with bite marks and one struggling with a German shepherd.

Police said the two injured deer were "humanely euthanized due to the severity of their injuries from the dog attacks."

The German shepherd and the second dog, a Labrador mix, were captured by Animal Control officers. Officials said the dogs were not wearing collars but Animal Control was able to locate their owners. Officials did not say whether the canines would be released to their owners.

Mosier said the damage to the school was estimated at $3,000 to $5,000.

"Suffice it to say, the cleanup that was necessary prevented us from opening either school today," Mosier said Monday.

He said middle and elementary school classes would operate as scheduled for the rest of the week.
