Honor the "classic morning meal and midnight snack" on March 7.

NEW YORK, March 7 (UPI) -- Although most people probably think of St. Patrick’s Day when they think of mid-March holidays, they are overlooking a day that is almost as important -- National Cereal Day.

So how did this holiday come to be? The National Cereal Day website has the answer:

“Strange that the invention of breakfast cereal was founded on the fact that the American diet of the mid 1800s was a poor one packed with protein, booze and caffeine. Or maybe it’s not so strange. After all, cereal was considered a remedy -- a sort of 19th-century health or wonder food for the ailing masses. So if you’re raising a milk-sopped spoonful of oats or bran or wheat today, give a little nod to National Cereal Day, which honors this classic morning meal and midnight snack on March 7.”

Here are a few fun facts about cereal:

-- Cap’n Crunch’s full name is Horatio Magellan Crunch and he’s a captain even though his uniform only has three stripes which would indicate that he’s simply a Navy Commander.

-- 49 percent of the more than 314 million people in the U.S. wake up and eat cereal.

-- There are 2.7 billion boxes of cereal sold every year.
