The judge said that the parents are not responsible for Canning's high-school tuition and cost of living, and his decision on college tuition is undetermined. The ruling came after Canning moved out of her parents' home and her parents stopped paying her bills.
Her parents claim that Canning was not kicked out but rather she moved out because she did not want to follow their rules. Her parents say they love their daughter, but require her to follow their rules if she lives under their roof.
"We love our child and miss her," said Canning's father. "We're not draconian and now, we're getting hauled into court. She's demanding that we pay her bills yet she doesn't want to live at home."
The judge is concerned about setting a bad precedent. "What would the next step be? Are we going to condone a 12-year-old to sue for an Xbox?" he said in his ruling.
Canning is staying with her best friend's family. They are the ones financing the lawsuit.
