David Backes, team captain of the Blues and a member of the Team USA that left Sochi without a medal, arrived at St. Louis' Lambert Airport this week with his wife and two new immigrants, a pair of strays from the Russian city, KTVI-TV, St. Louis, reported Wednesday.
Backes said the dogs were among those roaming the resort where athletes' families were staying and the pair just refused to leave.
"By the end of it those two were living in hotel rooms where they shouldn't have been, getting baths in bathtubs where they shouldn't have been," Backes said.
The dogs were taken to Five Acres Animal Shelter in St. Charles, Mo., where they will be monitored for 30 days to make sure they are healthy before being put up for adoption.
"We`re going to be caring for them in that time, socializing them, teaching them English, you know fun things like that," Brittany Broombaugh of Five Acres said.
Backes said he was happy to be able to help dogs from Sochi, where many strays reportedly wind up euthanized or otherwise killed.
"The story being told of how these dogs are just like yours and mine at home, and how you know we should treat our animals with respect and be responsible pet owners is a story that a lot of people wanted to tell and I think we`re telling it now," he said.
