WASHINGTON, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- During an event recognizing Black History Month on Tuesday, Joe Biden took a moment to talk up his basketball skills.

The vice president joked that he wanted to suit up on the same team as former NBA point guard and current Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson to take on President Obama.

"I told the president, next game, I've got him," Biden said, according to the Washington Post. "I may be a white boy, but I can jump."

After the jokes about basketball, Biden addressed Voter ID bills passed in states like Alabama, Texas and North Carolina. Biden indicated that the passage of the bills in those Southern states proved that racism still exists as some believe they are designed to prevent African-Americans from voting.

"These guys never go away. Hatred never, never goes away," Biden said. "The zealotry of those who wish to limit the franchise cannot be smothered by reason."

Biden linked the current situation to the civil rights movement of the 1960s. “Without the right to vote, nothing else much mattered,” he said.
