NOVI, Mich., Feb. 17 (UPI) -- A Michigan pastor said nearly 9,000 volunteers came together and prepared more than 2 million meals to be shipped to needy children around the world.

Brad Powell, a senior pastor with NorthRidge Church, said nearly 9,000 volunteers with three churches pitched in between noon Friday and 4 p.m. Sunday to assemble 2,029,536 dried meals at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi for 5,560 kids to receive one meal per day for a year, the Detroit News reported Monday.

The meals are being shipped to locations including Haiti, El Salvador and the Philippines.

Powell said many of the participants were first-time volunteers.

"It's not just the people who will be eating whose lives are changed," Powell said.

The church partnered with Minnesota non-profit Feed My Starving Children for the project.
