LYCKSELE, Sweden, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- A Swedish man who delivered his and his partner's baby in his car was awarded a T-shirt by staff at the local birthing center.

The man, whose name was not given, told the Norran newspaper he was driving his pregnant partner to the Lycksele Midwife Birthing Center late at night when it became apparent the birth would not wait for the end of the 20-minute drive, Swedish news agency TT reported Tuesday.

The man said he pulled over and called an ambulance, but the baby boy was born before help arrived.

He said a midwife from the birthing center guided him through the process over the phone.

"They said I was calm, but I was in a state of shock at the same time. When the baby came out, he didn't cry at first, but when I did what the midwife said he got going and started breathing," the father said.

He said staff at the center were impressed with his efforts and awarded him a free T-shirt bearing the center's logo.
