Russian newlyweds jailed for attacking police officers

CHEBOKSARY, Russia, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- A Russian bride and groom accused of attacking three police officers were each sentenced to 18 months in prison.

Russia's Investigative Committee released a statement Wednesday detailing the case of the 24-year-old groom in the Chuvashia republic who drunkenly crashed his rental car into a bus station and fled on foot, RIA Novosti reported Wednesday.

The man returned to the scene to argue with police officers towing the car and he was soon joined by his 23-year-old bride, the committee said.

The couple attacked the three officers with punches, kicks and headbutts during the September incident, the statement said.

The bride and groom, whose names were not released, were convicted of assaulting an officer on duty and were each sentenced to 18 months in prison.
