'Date Grape Koolaid' drink sparks protest outside Spokane, Wash., bar

SPOKANE, Wash., Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Organizers of a protest outside a new Spokane, Wash., bar offering "Date Grape Koolaid" on its drink list said nearly a hundred people turned up.

The demonstration, organized by Taylor Malone on Facebook hours after the Daiquiri Factory in downtown Spokane posted its menu online, saw nearly 100 people gather outside the bar during its grand opening Saturday evening to send a message to the business about making light of rape, the Spokane Spokesman-Review reported Monday.

"I am a two-time rape survivor," she said.

Malone said she had already asked the owners of the Daiquiri Factory to change the name of the drink.

"They responded by mocking us. They doubled down and made an even bigger joke of it," she said, without specifying how the business "doubled down."

An employee at the door of the bar said the business had no comment about the controversy.

The Daiquiri Factory thanked users on social media sites for their support.

"And yes, the Date Grape Koolaid is selling out. Time to make MORE!" a post on the Daiquiri Factory's Twitter page read. "Come On In! We are having a Grape Time!!"
