MASOY, Norway, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Officials in a municipality in Norway's far north said they are willing to give away a church building free to a group that commits to its maintenance.

Masoy officials said the Ingoya island church, built from brick in 1957 following the destruction of the previous church during World War II, requires $230,000 in renovations and the Masoy parish council is unable to afford the work, TheLocal.no reported Monday.

"The council and the church don't have the funds to be able to care for the church," Masoy parish head Arne Nygaard told the Vart Land newspaper. "The parish council has therefore decided that they want to 'give away' the church to a foundation, or a Christian denomination, that is able to take better care of the building."
