The Mirror newspaper of Britain said Angela Maier of Essen, Germany, told a court she received a steep bill from the home that cared for her husband prior to his death shortly after she received her lottery winnings.
Maier said she had consumed five bottles of champagne before she made the decision to tear up her $547,120 in lottery winnings and flush them down the toilet.
While it was not illegal to destroy the money, only an expert would be able to determine if Maier was telling the truth about the fate of the cash, the court was told. The Mirror said the court decided to forgo the expense of an expert and Maier agreed to pay the home $5,471 in compensation.
