Police: Grow house suspect wanted to smoke joint before arrest

POINCIANA, Fla., Jan. 23 (UPI) -- Authorities in Florida said a man suspected of operating a marijuana grow house refused to open the door because he wanted to smoke a joint.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office said deputies executed a search warrant Tuesday at the suspected grow house in Poinciana and resident David Scott Shultz, 32, refused to open the door for deputies when they identified themselves and told him why they were there, Tampa (Fla.) cable news outlet Bay News 9 reported Thursday.

The sheriff's office said deputies could smell the odor of marijuana through the door and Shultz told them he wanted to smoke a joint before letting them come inside.

Shultz eventually opened the door and deputies discovered 190 marijuana plants being grown in three rooms of the house.

Shultz, who had an active warrant for his arrest in Osceola County, was jailed on charges of maintaining a dwelling for drug manufacturing, cultivation of cannabis, possession of cannabis with intent to sell and possession of drug paraphernalia.
