BREMEN, Germany, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- Police in Germany said they are trying to track down the model plane believed to be behind a UFO sighting that brought an airport to a halt.

Investigators said some 50 witnesses reported spotting a UFO in the sky near Bremen airport from 6:30 p.m. until about 9:30 p.m. Jan. 6 and flights were grounded while authorities worked to identify the object, TheLocal.de reported Wednesday.

Police said many of the witnesses described the object as appearing to be a model plane, while some others confused a police helicopter sent to investigate for the object itself and another group identified an Air France plane waiting on the runway as the mystery object.

Officials said the object is now believed to have been a model plane and the Bremen state prosecutor's office is looking into whether the incident constituted a dangerous intrusion of air space.

Investigators said they have no leads as to who was controlling the model, but it may have been flown by someone using a computer to control it from a distance.

Police said they are probing the city's "model plane scene" for potential leads.
