Customers picked winning football teams, Houston store is out $600,000

HOUSTON, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- A Houston furniture store's gimmick of choosing the winning football teams in last weekend's championship games cost the store owner $600,000, he said.

Gallery Furniture offered customers an opportunity to recover the costs of their purchases: buy at least $5,000 worth of items and pick the winners of the NFC and AFC championship games. If the chosen teams win, the store will refund the cost of the items to the buyer.

The Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks, both favored to win, and indeed, the winners of the games, were chosen by 85 percent of the customers, and $600,000 in refunds were provided, the Houston Chronicle reported Wednesday.

"On Sunday night I had a 'me and my bright ideas' moment," said store owner Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale, "but then I realized it was a great success because it made a lot of customers happy."
