LIVERPOOL, England, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- British police said the ability to personalize alert tones on license plate scanners allows cartoon characters including Homer Simpson to help catch crooks.

Merseyside Police Chief Superintendent Mark Harrison said the department uses high-tech cameras that scan license plates and alert officers if vehicle owners are wanted by police or suspected of being connected to crimes, the Mirror reported Thursday.

"It [the software] makes a noise, which depends what you have it set to," Harrison said. "I know some officers have it on Homer Simpson. There's Road Runner as well, 'meep meep.'"

Harrison said the department plans to add 50 cameras to its current network of 90 in April.

He said the program is being partially paid for from the sales of seized criminal property.

"Ultimately, this will lead to more criminals being arrested, stolen vehicles and illegal commodities being seized and serious crime being reduced in our neighborhoods," he said.
