Kittens find a home at New York state prison

FORT ANN, N.Y., Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Officials at a New York state prison said a quartet of kittens that made their way into the facility are being cared for by workers and inmates.

Jeffrey Lindstrand, deputy superintendent of administration at Great Meadow Correctional Facility, said the kittens were discovered in the bowels of the prison a few months ago and workers combined their funds with money from the state to get rid of the "hundreds" of fleas infesting the felines and have the animals dewormed, the Glen Falls (N.Y.) Post-Star reported Wednesday.

Lindstrand said the kittens were dubbed Doc, in honor of the Department of Correctional Services; Comstock, after the location of the prison; Annie, for Fort Ann; and Meadow, for the prison's name.

Bruce Porter, the prison's head electrician, said he has been showing up for work an hour early to care for the kittens. He said an inmate dubbed "the cat whisperer" takes care of the felines on weekends and has been able to train them to follow instructions given in Spanish.

Lindstrand said many cats have wandered into the facility over the years, and they are given veterinary care under the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals' Trap, Neuter and Release program. He said the kittens are young enough that they will likely be adopted before they would be released back outside in the spring.
