Norway attaching reflective cuffs to reindeer antlers

Jan. 9, 2014 at 12:46 PM

OSLO, Norway, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Norwegian officials said as many as 10,000 reindeer are being outfitted with reflector cuffs on their antlers to make them more visible to motorists.

Kristian Overnes, a senior adviser at the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, said the biodegradable cuffs showed success in trials that began in 2010 and are now being used across the country for herds living near roads, theLocal.no reported Thursday.

An estimated 200,000 reindeer live in Norway and about 10,000 are being outfitted with the reflective cuffs.

"Reindeer are pack animals so we don't need to mark all of them, " Overnes said. "It's enough to tag a part of the herd."
