WARRANDYTE, Australia, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- An Australian couple arrived home on the first day of 2014 after spending more than a year running daily marathons across the country.

Janette Murray-Wakelin and Alan Murray, who are in their 60s, said they ran 27.34 miles --slightly longer than a standard marathon -- Wednesday and completed their 366-day marathon project at their Warrandyte home, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported Thursday.

The couple, who ran their daily marathons on a raw vegan diet, said they had a team of volunteers following them on their foot-tour of Australia.

"They all helped us, they gave up their valuable time to come with us, to drive our vehicles, to be our nannies, push us out the door in the morning and just generally take care of us," Alan Murray was quoted as saying.

The couple said they hope their project will inspire others to live healthier lifestyles.
