Chanti Carter-Rene, 29, of East Orange, said she discovered a Citibank envelope filled with $100 bills on a Morristown sidewalk two days before Christmas and decided to leave the cash and her business card with bank employees in case the owner came searching for it, the (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger reported Wednesday.
Carter-Rene said she would not have been able to keep the money.
"The guilt would kill me," she said. "I'm gonna feel guilty whenever I see it."
Chris Gagnon, 50, who withdrew the cash from Citibank to pay a bill, said he put the envelope in his jacket pocket and it fell out through a hole.
Gagnon said his panic was calmed when he discovered someone had returned the money.
"I was just so grateful what a wonderful thing," he said. "I think most people are more honest than we give them credit for."
Gagnon said he was glad Carter-Rene left her card so he could thank her personally.
"I said 'this is the fellow whose life you saved,'" he said. "I said 'I just wanted to thank you so much.'"
