Artist: Norway WWII monument typos result from spell-checker

OSLO, Norway, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- The designer of a Norway monument to World War II resistance fighters blamed its typos on an English spell-checker and artistic expression.

Kirsten Kokkin, the artist who designed the monument to the communist "Pelle Group," a cadre of World War II resistance fighters, said several misspellings on the Oslo landmark, unveiled in November, resulted her using the spell-checker on an English word processing program, TheLocal.no reported Monday.

"I was working on the text in the U.S., and I didn't have a Norwegian word-processing program. The text has been checked by three people other than me. So it was a mistake, but it can't be changed after the event," she said.

However, she said some other typos were just artistic expression.

"I didn't want to use too many characters. ... We shouldn't forget that this is a work of art, an artistic retelling of a historic moment in time. It shouldn't be thought of as a document," she said.

The typos include misspelling the word "fellesskap," Swedish for "community," as "felleskap;" leaving the "t" out of "Oslo-omradet," which means the Oslo area; and numerous instances of missing and misplaced punctuation.
